Life Under Occupation AUGUST 28, 2001 -- Palestinians in the Rafah refugee camp exchange fire with soldiers at a nearby Israeli military post. One Palestinian is killed. A PLO faction says that they were shooting to protest the death of PLO leader Mustafa Zibri, who was the target of an Israeli missle attack a few days ago.

Israeli tanks and bulldozers roll into Rafah, destroying 15 houses. Among those left homeless is Jazya Jouda, who is seen here sitting in the rubble of her home. According to a spokesman of the Israel Defense Forces, several "unoccupied buildings" are razed.

Although this is an area supposedly under autonomous Palestinian control, the Israeli tanks continue almost a mile into Rafah, destroying a Palestinian police station. The tanks stop their advance just outside a Palestinian hospital.

Israel says that Palestinians are smuggling weapons into the camp from nearby Egypt, and the destroyed buildings were being used to provide cover for the smugglers as well as Palestinians who were throwing hand grenades at Israeli soldiers who patrol the border.

Mohammad al-Dabbas, a 17-year-old Palestinian is critically wounded after he is shot by an Israeli soldier. Israelis say that they were firing at an armed man planting explosives. Funerals are held for Tamir Zu'rub and Muhammad al-Hamrani, Palestinian radio says. Both were killed by Israeli soldiers.

It was the second time this week that Rafah has been the scene of violence. A few days earlier, a missle struck the home of Palestinian activist Samir Abu Zeid, killing him and two children, age 6 and 7. Palestinians say it was an Israeli missle. Israelis say he was "engaged in hostile terrorist activity initiated by him." On the weekend Israelis also killed a Palestinian policeman as tanks destroyed police headquarters and two roadblocks.

The 4-day total in Rafah is four Palestinians dead and 22 Palestinian injuries. No Israelis are reported harmed.
